The Nitpicker's Guide to Rent
For those little things you can't help but notice...

This page shows how little of a life I have.  Don't take this page too seriously, it's just to have fun and make you think.  Thanks to Phil Farrand, who writes the Nitpickers guides to X-Files, Star Trek, etc.

UPDATE: 2/24/02: This has probably been the most horribly updated page on the 'net.  Well, maybe not, but.  Anyway, I don't think I've put up anything here for about a year.  I've been bad about keeping track of e-mails, too.  If anyone has submitted a nit in the last well...year, please feel free to submit it again.  I'm going to actually try to update this time.  However, I'd rather not take possible solutions for the page (unless you just feel like arguing a point with me in an e-mail, which is fine) just because it would be time consuming to set up a Possible Solutions page and I know it would be badly updated.  In short: FORGIVE ME!!!!!

I'm guessing if you're visiting this page, you've probably seen Rent or heard the soundtrack.  But just in case you haven't, there are spoilers here.  BEWARE!

-Why does Mrs. Cohen say she'll miss Mark tomorrow (Christmas) in "Voice Mail #1" when the Cohens are Jewish?

-Why does Mimi go to Mark and Roger's apartment in "Light My Candle?"  According to the script (which I have a copy of courtesy of the Rent book), Mimi is a "beautiful stranger from downstairs."  Why didn't she try to get a light from someone on her own floor?

-How often does Maureen change her answering machine?  The answering machine refers to the performance being "tonight", meaning she must have recorded it earlier on that day.  I know I haven't changed my answering machine in probably the last three years.  Why did on a very busy day Maureen think to change her answering machine?

-Why can Angel do his dance on the table in "Today 4 U" when the power's out?  Wouldn't he trip since he can't see anything?

-What was the point of Jonathan Larson having Benny tell Mark and Roger he'll let them stay for free in "You'll See" when no one follows up on this?

-where does Roger get the guitar from for his "Musetta's Waltz" solo in La Vie Boheme?  He definitely doesn't take it with him on the way out the door.

-in I Should Tell You, Mimi says "I should tell I blew the candle out just to get back in."  But in Light My Candle, Mimi only actually blows out her candle once, and that's right after Roger says "She died.  Her name is April" which is still within the first time Mimi enters.  So how did she need to get back in?
     (For those of you confused:
     1. Mimi comes in, asks for Roger to light her candle (he does).
     2. Mimi blows out the candle on purpose after Roger starts talking about April.  However, she is STILL inside.
     3. Mimi and Roger have the whole wax thing, Roger says "Oh well, goodnight" and Mimi leaves.
     4. Mimi knocks to get back in, with her candle STILL lit.  She comes back in because she dropped her stash.
     5. Mimi gets rid of the flame right after "it's a living", Roger lights it again.  She's STILL inside.
     6. ROGER blows out the candle after Mimi says "We could light the candle."

Oh well, I guess "just to get back in" sounds better than "'cause I think you're hot and I wanted to stick around."

-At the beginning of "Happy New Year", Roger claims that they only have three and a half minutes until next year.  In between "Happy New Year" and "Voice mail 3", at least three and a half minutes have passed, if not more by the time we get to Happy New Year B.  What's with the timing?  (someone correct me if I'm wrong...I can't find my copy of disk 2 at the moment)

-At the beginning of "Happy New Year", Mimi has to ask Roger what time it is.  Yet towards the end (right before "Voice Mail Three"), she say "Two minutes left to execute our plan."  Why did she have to ask Roger the first time if later on she knew what time it was?

-In Voice Mail #1, Mrs. Cohen takes about 33-34 seconds.  In Voice Mail #4 (I think...the one with Alexi Darling), Alexi takes only 30 seconds, but she's cut off.  Why did she get cut off when Mrs. Cohen didn't?

-(from Melanie) Why does Angel sing in Contact when she died in Without You?  People don't come back from the dead.
(Miaka's note: I remember the script in the Rent book saying something about how in Without You Collin takes Angel to the bed where he will die in the next song, but I'm not sure.  I always assumed that Angel died in Contact).

-Why can't Maureen get Mimi up the stairs in "Finale A?"  I can see how Maureen alone might have trouble, but isn't Joanne with her?

-Mimi doesn't actually close her eyes in "Your Eyes" until after Roger sings "You can see it in my eyes", aka AFTER his song is over.  Roger then proceeds to yell her name and embrace her once he thinks she's gone.  It's during this time that Mimi sees Angel, who tells her to listen to Roger's song.  What song?  Roger is just laying there!
